I'm Thankful

November 24, 2018

We have a tradition in our family. On thanksgiving we gather together (as many of us as can) and sit around the table eating. While we eat we each take turns telling what we are thankful for. We get a lot of the usual stuff, some sentimental, some verging on crazy, some funny. But I thought I'd let you know what some of mine are.

I'm thankful for my family and my friends. I'm thankful for my home. I'm thankful for the food I eat. I'm thankful for indoor plumbing. I'm thankful for heating and air conditioning. I'm thankful for the clothes I have. I'm well aware that I am lucky in all those things. That I live in a style that ancient kings could only dream about. Though I have a lot less than many people around me. A lot less.

I'm grateful to have a job. I'm thankful for each day that I live. I'm thankful that I live in a country that believes in and protects the rights of individuals to speak their thoughts, worship as they feel best, associate with whomever they wish. I'm grateful for those that sacrificed so much so that we can live in a society where all people are considered equal. I'm thankful for those that gave us ideals they couldn't live up to, but wanted so much for everyone.

I'm thankful that I was able to receive a good education. Thankful for books and the internet and all the various methods of transmitting knowledge and understanding. I'm grateful for the wide variety of entertainment available today. And I appreciate all the little simple pleasures that come from ignoring all the media hype and bombardment.

I'm thankful that I have had some small success at writing. It's the toughest work, but very rewarding. I'm thankful for the opportunity I have to put my idle thoughts up for anyone to peruse. I'm grateful for the writing and artistic community around me. They sometimes frustrate me, but they also build me up and motivate me.

I'm thankful for the spiritual side of my life. For the many people who have sacrificed of themselves for something greater, and for those who have shown me the power of good in this world. For miracles I never expected. For the chance to choose between good and evil. For my savior and redeemer.

I'm thankful for so many things, so many people, so many small everyday occurrences.

Thank you for reading this.
