Snow by any other name

A few weeks ago I saw something that for me is one of the most beautiful things on Earth. It was a very cold day, and I was out running errands. As I looked around it appeared that glitter was floating all around. It was a kind of snow, but like nothing I'd ever seen before. It wasn't falling, or even blowing horizontally as it is wont to due here. It just hung there glittering in the air, making everything look magical.

I wanted to just stop, sit there in my car, and look at it. It was amazing. It was wonderful. It was breathtaking. It filled my heart and my mind. It was gorgeous. It's one of those things that make you stop what you're doing and realize how incredible life really is.

I had to know what it was, where to find it, what causes it. Glitter floating in the air, tiny ice particles flashing and flickering, snow defying gravity and floating in the air.

It took me a while to find out what it is. It's called diamond dust. It is basically a type of frozen fog. It happens only when it is very, very cold. It's common in Antarctica, where very cold describes the weather all year long. It doesn't photograph well, I didn't see any pictures of it. But it is amazing. I'm not sure I'd recommend going to Antarctica just to see it, but if you ever do see it you'll never forget it.
